Hecla Island is situated in Lake Winnipeg, approximately 150 minutes, driving time, north of Winnipeg.
(Winnipeg is a capital city of the most central province in Canada, Manitoba).
Once away from the outskirts of the city, Highway 8 runs north and then parallel to lake Winnipeg, passing through mainly farm land and the small town of Gimli, then north for another 40 minutes or so, until you  reach the causeway over to the Island. The traffic gradually reduces to the occasional vehicle.
The map taken from the book Death at the Point shows the island.
The island is approximately 30kms north to south.
The causeway built in the early  1970's carries the highway onto the Island, before the causeway was built there was a ferry.
The Southern part of the island is marsh and wetland and habitat for a large range of bird and animal life. The road then proceeds through forest for the rest of the road north ending at the highest part of the island on a large outcrop of limestone that juts out of the lake as a major headland with wonderful views over the lake and surrounding islands During our time on the island we have seen black bear, moose, white tail deer, fox, skunk, and even a lynx. Pelican and bald eagles are common as well as multiple bird species such as geese, swan, duck, gulls, hawks, and a host of others. Hecla island is a provincial park and a haven to all this wild life. We have also spotted wolves from time to time.

For life long city dwellers, Hecla Island in all its beauty, and its peace and quiet places was a sanctuary for us, a place where you can hear the sound of silence, slow down, and appreciate the blessings of a simpler way of life.

In the coming blogs I will share other aspects of this wonderful place.

There is something very unique about living on an Island............!
